Students will read several Greek myths, and identify the characteristics of a myth, the hero, and the stages of the journey. Students will compare the characteristics of mythic heroes to heroes today. Students will use the Showing Evidence Tool to determine who the hero is in a myth and explain why. Students will work in groups to create an original myth, which includes a hero and the necessary stages of the journey. Students will then illustrate the myth by using Pixie to create pictures that support the story. Digital myths will be shared within the class and in a school-wide technology showcase.

Assessment Summary

In order to assess students, a variety of things will be used. Class discussion and questioning will be used to ensure understanding of content. In groups, students will read myths, and complete a graphic organizer identifying the characters in a myth, determining the hero, identifying mythic characteristics, and the characteristics of the hero. The rubrics and planning guide will also help guide students along the way.

For all of time, cultures have had their own heroes. In Greek Mythology, heroes such as Theseus, Hercules, and Jason all had super-human strength to complete a task, usually with the help of the gods. These heroes also display positive qualities like bravery, goodness, generosity, and courage. In "Medusa's Head," Perseus is a hero-like figure, however, he does kill others, because of the loyalty to his family.

Week One-Two

  • Introduce mythology

  • Go over mythology notes

  • Create inspiration web describing qualities of a hero and discuss.

  • Read Medusa’s Head in textbook.

  • Read online version of “Medusa’s Head” (http://mythweb.com/heroes/perseus/index.html), and complete Medusa Head Character Chart.

Be sure to do comprehension activities like, re-read, complete a timeline, sequence events of the story using sentence strips, act out the scenes, etc.

  • Discuss what makes Perseus the mythic hero- focus on characteristics, character motivation, etc.

  • In groups, have students read three myths of their choice, while completing the GreekMyths-variety for each myth to help guide them through their reading. (http://mythweb.com/heroes/heroes.html) or http://greece.mrdonn.org/myths.html or http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/Homework/greece/myths.htm

  • Groups will then choose one myth to analyze and present. Groups will make a presentation summarizing a myth of their choice, identifying the mythic characteristics, analyzing the hero and explaining, with evidence, what makes the hero a hero. (could be just an oral presentation, or could be a multi-media presentation.)

  • Students will complete Showing Evidence Tool: Is Perseus the hero in Medusa’s Head?





Week Three

  • In large group, brainstorm some modern-day heroes, and record answers.

  • Students will research 3 modern day heroes, and complete graphic organizer for each hero. http://library.thinkquest.org/C001515/design/

  • Students will choose the hero they most connected with.

  • Return to Inspiration, and revise hero definition, and discuss.


Week Three to Four

  • Review myth-characteristics, mythic hero characteristics, modern-day hero characteristics, and elements of plot in order to help students write their myth.

  • Review 6-trait rubric as a class, focusing on mythic elements in the “ideas” category.

In groups, students will write a myth, incorporating some of the mythic characteristics, using a modern-day hero. (use “create your own myth” handout to help introduce writing assignment, and discuss expectations.)

  • Students will pre-write using Myth Planning Guide and a plot map.

  • Students will write their rough draft, edit and revise, and then write final draft using Word.

  • Review digital story rubric.

  • Students will create pictures in Pixie that go along with their myth to use in a digital story. (need a minimum of 10).

  • Students will create a digital story using Podcasting or Pixie, incorporating all 10+ pictures and narrating the story.

  • Students will present digital myth storybook in class, with peers and parents on a celebration day.
